Like Irish stouts, Irish ales are sociable session beers with a low alcohol content but substantial body. This beer pours with a deep red color and tan head over a caramel-like malt character with roasty and fruity notes. This beer has a similar taste to Smithwicks, though not quite as full bodied and little lingering flavor, but a smooth light finish.
Half of this batch was bottled with honey instead of sugar for a stronger honey flavor. Final outcome was little change in taste.
