The top image at right displays the latest infrared satellite image taken by
NOAA's GOES satellite. The infrared picture highlights the cloud temperatures
as visible to the satellite. The larger and more dense the cloud system, the
brighter the color appears. This is also useful to see the cloud cover over the
United States at night, as visible satellite imagery isn't functional at night.
The middle image at right displays the latest water vapor image recorded by the
GOES satellite. The water vapor image highlights the water content in clouds.
As the water content of a cloud system increases, it's color will appear brighter.
The lower image at right displays the latest visible satellite picture recorded by
the GOES satellite of Colorado. This picture will be blank at night due to the
satellite's inability to see visible clouds in the dark.
